What Came First the Chicken or the Egg?
Posted on April 20, 2015Last week we filmed promotional videos for each of our trainers. Many of the shots were taken of us exercising outside, as we ourselves exercise outside to add variety to our routines. Both Richard and I were wearing our ‘No Gym’ shirts and as we were walking back to our office we met a woman on the sidewalk and she said, ‘No gym, you guys don’t need to go to the gym you’re in phenomenal shape’. We said ‘thanks’ and continued walking. After reflecting on this comment I read between the lines and I think what she was saying is ‘in-shape’ people don’t need to exercise because they are by definition ‘in-shape’. In her mind this person has framed that you are either ‘in shape’ or you’re not and you only need to exercise if you’re not in shape. What actually happens is anyone whom exercises over time becomes ‘in-shape’ because they exercise and continue to exercise. Fitness isn’t an end game where once you become ‘fit’ you can just stop exercising and stay ‘fit’. This person’s beliefs are probably contributing to her not exercising and it’s unfortunate because exercising is the single healthiest thing you can do for your body. You have to always work at it, try new things and add variation to your exercise programs to keep your body adapting. You’re not born ‘un-fit’ you become ‘un-fit’. Finding strategies that work for you to keep yourself motivated are very important. Just remember the chicken and the egg evolved together, one didn’t come before the other.
