8 Tips for New Moms

Written by Jonathan

If you are a mom to a newborn you are likely focusing all of your time and energy on your little one. The lack of sleep and stress that can come with being a new parent can take its toll on you and it is important that you take time to look after your own health and well-being. Here are 8 tips to help you take care of yourself so that you can take care of your newborn.

1. No dieting. You may want to quickly lose your baby weight but starving yourself is not the right answer for you or your baby. Especially if you are breastfeeding you need to be sure you are consuming additional nutrients.

2. Prepare freezer meals ahead of time. Plan ahead and prepare numerous meals during your pregnancy that you can pull out of the freezer once the baby is born and you don’t feel like you have the time or energy to cook.

3. Sleep when your baby sleeps. Take the opportunity to get some rest when your baby does. Don’t worry about the laundry or cleaning the house, your body needs sleep as much as your baby does.

4. Know the signs and symptoms of postpartum depression. It is common to experience mood swings after delivery but up to 20% of women experience depression beyond the “baby blues”.

5. Get active. Physical activity can boost your energy levels, reduce stress and help you lose weight. Refer to our other blog for more information on exercise tips for new moms.

6. Stay hydrated. Again, this is even more important if you are breastfeeding. Try keeping a reusable one litre bottle with you during the day and you should consume an average of one to two bottles per day depending on your activity level.

7. Be mindful of your posture. With hours spent holding and carrying your newborn you can quickly adapt bad habits that strain your back. Use a nursing pillow for feedings to avoid hunching over and rounding your shoulders. Practice proper lifting techniques when lifting your baby in and out of the crib and car seat.

8. Have fun. Join a “Mommy and Me” class at your local community centre. This is a great way to stay active, bond with your baby and meet some other moms in your neighbourhood.
