I Want to Change the WorldPosted on August 29, 2015
Just typing that makes my heart beat a little faster, but it’s true. I don’t know where it comes from, maybe I watched too many episodes of Superman growing up or maybe it comes from my family or some combination of the two.
Usually when we think about changing the world we think of leading activists like Bill Gates and technological giants like Steve Jobs. Everyone else just wakes up every morning and drives to work does their job, comes home watches a little T.V, goes to bed and repeats. We’ve made ‘changing the world’ so much bigger than ourselves that it becomes a little bit like ‘what’s the point I’m just one insignificant person that works 9 to 5, I can’t change anything,’ but here’s the thing, you can.
You can wake up a little bit earlier and go for a run, you can smile at your co-worker every time you pass them in the hall, you can offer a listening ear to your spouse when something is really bothering them and you can say yes to being the chaperone on your kids field day. These are all minute things that don’t cost anything but a bit of time and they can make a world of difference to the person you’re interacting with. If you took a little bit of time out of your ‘busy’ day to do one little thing for someone else then you’ve changed the world. I don’t know where this quote comes from but I’ve heard it 3 times in the last week and I’m going to share it with you even though these types of quotes usually really bug me,
‘Be the change you want to see in the world.’
Everyday I wake up and I try to make a difference in at least one person’s life and if I’ve done that then I’ve changed the world. Now what’s stopping you?
